Talent Development Ecosystems Within SMART Researchers: What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

Europe’s next research leaders are in the making.
The SMART Researchers project combines structured training, mentorship, and cross-sector mobility to foster talent development, building a skilled community ready to tackle big challenges. Drawing on several interconnected concepts, the project ensures that talent doesn’t just grow – it is applied and leads to meaningful change across the continent.
Pillar 1: Career Support Centres
The seven Career Support Centres (CSCs), set up across three countries, form the core of the SMART Researchers approach. They provide hands-on guidance, targeted training, and practical capacity-building for Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs), supporting talent development across institutions. The CSCs also help institutions implement Strategic Action Plans for career development, making professional growth consistent, structured, and aligned with each institution’s objectives. In addition, they also support compliance with the European Charter for Researchers and emerging EU standards for research careers, creating more attractive and sustainable research environments that strengthen both individual careers and broader research ecosystems.
Pillar 2: Baseline Assessment
The baseline assessment and competency mapping will evaluate the existing skills early stage researchers possess against the ResearchComp framework and identify gaps in sectoral and transversal competencies needed for the twin transitions. Through surveys and interviews, the project will assess current expertise across the seven ResearchComp areas: Doing Research, Managing Research, Managing Research Tools, Making an Impact, Self-Management, Working with Others, and Cognitive Abilities. This assessment will serve as a foundation for designing the micro-credentialing and certification framework, ensuring that subsequent training programmes support talent development and meet labor market demands.
Pillar 3: Career pathways
By setting up Career Support Centres (CSCs) at seven institutions in Serbia, Greece, and Croatia, the project integrates HR practices aligned with the European Charter for Researchers, creating career pathways that are flexible, sustainable, and tailored to both academic and non-academic needs. A key component of this effort will be the SMART Researchers Competency Lab. Accessible through the project website, the Competency Lab serves as the project’s digital hub for learning, certification, and community-building. It brings together training modules, e-learning courses, mentorship programmes, peer-learning networks, and collaboration opportunities in one place.
By the end of the project, more than 600 ESRs will have participated in training, and 150+ will have engaged in peer-learning and mentorship. The Lab also helps researchers track their progress and demonstrates the value of structured, evidence-based career support for talent development in research careers.
Pillar 4: Micro-credentials & Certifications
SMART Researchers is developing seven stackable micro-credential pathways based on the main competence areas of the ResearchComp framework. These pathways guide ESRs from foundational to advanced skills across 38 sub-competencies, providing formal recognition for their expertise and reinforcing talent development. Embedded within the CSCs, the micro-credentials align with institutional career strategies while equipping researchers to meet the challenges of Europe’s green and digital transitions.
Pillar 5: The SMART Researchers Grand Prix
Talent development also means visibility. The SMART Researchers Grand Prix brings outstanding ideas to the forefront by giving ESRs a platform to pitch innovative research solutions. With 120+ participants, the competition highlights promising early-career talent, celebrates digital innovation, recognises female leadership, and fosters a culture of excellence and collaboration. In addition, six ESR Career Weeks will gather 180+ participants, offering practical training, coaching, and exposure to diverse career paths. By providing visibility and recognition, the Grand Prix supports talent development by encouraging researchers to push boundaries, collaborate across sectors and contribute to impactful, future-ready solutions.
PIllar 6: Institutional Support & Mentorship
Strong institutions create strong researchers. Through tailored mentorship programmes and institutional capacity building, SMART Researchers strengthens the environments in which ESRs develop their careers. Each participating institution receives guidance to embed long-term support structures – from improved supervision practices to mentorship schemes that last beyond the project. Mentorship programmes match ERSs with experienced academics and industry professionals, fostering personalised career guidance, cross sector exposure, and skill development.
Building the Future of European Research
The SMART Researchers project shows that a resilient and innovative research ecosystem depends on skilled, adaptable, and sustainability-conscious researchers. By combining Career Support Centres, ResearchComp-based micro-credentials, the Competency Lab, and recognition programmes, it offers a comprehensive blueprint for future-ready research careers. Beyond training and mentorship, SMART Researchers bridges gaps, mobilises talent across borders, and activates Europe’s full potential for scientific, economic, and societal impact, supporting talent development that equips researchers of today to lead the transformations of tomorrow.
