The SMART Researchers Project Launched: New Opportunities for Early-Stage Researchers
In September, the SMART Researchers project officially started. Funded by the Horizon Europe programme, it aims to support early-stage researchers in the initial phase of their careers and help them find their place in the job market. At a time when many young researchers go abroad in search of work and further training, SMART Researchers – which brings together 11 partners from Serbia, Croatia, Greece, and Latvia – offers them the chance to access high-quality support at home, whether they wish to stay in academia, explore industry, or start a career in the public sector.
A Support Network for Young Researchers: 7 New Career and Collaboration Centers
Young researchers across Europe face uncertain job prospects and limited opportunities for career development. The project coordinator, Assistant Professor Danijela Ćirić Lalić from the Faculty of Technical Sciences at the University of Novi Sad, highlights that researchers often lack systemic support:
“SMART Researchers aims to create a system of institutional support through seven career development centers, offering programmes, training, mentoring, international experience exchange, and internationally recognized certifications. This approach equips researchers with practical skills and professional contacts that open doors to more stable employment and greater competitiveness. The project also promotes knowledge exchange and strengthens scientific collaboration between countries, particularly in regions that are still developing their research capacities, such as the Balkans.”
The Power of Collaboration and Bridging Theory with Practice
SMART Researchers is implemented by universities and companies from the participating countries, connecting the educational and business sectors. This bridges the gap between theory and practice, enabling participants to acquire the most sought-after skills today – from digital technologies and innovation to business and communication abilities in the era of green and digital transition. Additionally, events such as competitions, workshops, and open days with companies will be organized to allow young researchers to connect directly with employers.
