From Lab to Market: A Practical Guide to “Industry-Ready” Research Skills

A PhD candidate submits a job application to an AI company. Four publications, a novel forecasting framework, and a healthy citation count. The hiring manager’s first question: “Tell me about a time you delivered something under a deadline, with incomplete requirements, to a non-technical audience.” Silence.
That silence is not a failure of the researcher. It is a failure of the system that trained them. Academic institutions in Europe produce world-class scientific minds, then send them into a labour market that speaks an entirely different language. The green and digital transition needs these researchers. Industry needs them. Public sector organisations need them. But the bridge between “published a paper” and “shipped a product” does not build itself.
This is exactly the problem that SMART Researchers was designed to solve, and why we are part of it.
What SMART Researchers Actually Do (and Why It Matters)
SMART Researchers (Strategic Micro-Credentialing and Skills Recognition for a Dynamic Early-Stage Researcher Talent Ecosystem) is a Horizon Europe project running from September 2025 to August 2028. It brings together nine partners from four countries, coordinated by the University of Novi Sad’s Faculty of Technical Sciences, with 1.875.375 € in EU funding.
The project’s goal is direct: build sustainable talent development ecosystems for early-stage researchers (ESRs) in Widening Countries. Not through another set of abstract guidelines, but through concrete infrastructure: Career Support Centres, micro-credentialing frameworks, structured training, and a scalable Competency Lab platform.
From where we sit (building AI systems, hiring researchers, working across sectors), this is one of the most practically useful research career initiatives we have seen come out of the Horizon programme. Here is why.
Career Support Centres That Actually Connect to Industry
Most universities have some form of career services. Few are designed specifically for researchers, and fewer still align with what industry actually looks for when hiring from academia.
SMART Researchers establishes or upgrades Career Support Centres (CSCs) as permanent hubs for guidance, mobility, and mentoring, not just within academia but across sectors. These centres align institutional HR practices with the European Framework for Research Careers and the European Charter for Researchers.
What does this mean in practice? An early-stage researcher in a Widening Country gets access to structured mentorship from people who work in industry, not just academics who once consulted for a company. Career guidance includes cross-sector pathways: how to move from a biomedical research lab to a health-tech startup, or from a computational linguistics PhD to a production NLP team. These are transitions that happen all the time, but almost always by accident rather than by design. SMART Researchers makes them intentional.
Micro-Credentials That Employers Can Actually Read
Here is a problem we see repeatedly when reviewing applications. A researcher has genuine, demonstrable skills in data engineering, statistical modelling, or experimental design. But no standardised way exists to prove it outside the academic CV format. Publications and conference presentations are legible to other academics. They are often opaque to a hiring manager at a tech company or a public sector innovation unit.
SMART Researchers addresses this through a micro-credentialing and certification framework built on the ResearchComp model. Researchers can acquire, validate, and demonstrate specific competencies in a format that makes sense to employers across academia, industry, and the public sector.
This is not about replacing the PhD. It is about supplementing it with evidence of transversal skills (project management, cross-sector communication, data literacy, teamwork in diverse settings) that a thesis alone does not prove. For researchers aiming at careers in the green and digital transition, where interdisciplinary skills are not a bonus but a requirement, this kind of portable, stackable credentialing is a real advantage.
The Competency Lab: A Platform That Outlasts the Project
One of the most promising elements of SMART Researchers is the Competency Lab, a scalable platform designed for continuous training, mentoring, ESR Weeks, and innovation competitions. It is not a one-off workshop series. It is built to persist beyond the project’s three-year timeline.
Inside the Competency Lab, researchers will find digital resource hubs with tailored training modules and e-learning courses, peer-learning and mentorship programmes, networking events and collaborative initiatives, and certification pathways tied to the micro-credential framework.
The “scalable” part matters most. Career development tools that only work during a funded project cycle and then disappear help nobody in the long run. The Competency Lab is designed to keep running. A researcher starting their PhD in 2027 can still access the same training infrastructure in 2030, updated and expanded by the community around it.
From Lab to Market: A Systems Approach, Not Isolated Fixes
Many researcher development programmes focus on one thing: a mentoring scheme here, a workshop series there, a career fair once a year. SMART Researchers uses a systems-thinking methodology that integrates three interconnected pillars: institutional HR alignment, structured training with credentials, and a digital platform for ongoing development.
This matters because the problem is systemic. A researcher does not fail to transition to industry because they missed one workshop. They fail because nobody told them that rewriting their CV in outcome-first language matters, that a clean GitHub repository is worth more than a fourth co-authored paper in some hiring processes, that the ability to explain a model to a non-technical colleague is a skill that can be practised and measured.
SMART Researchers connects these dots. HR practices, training content, credentialing, and ongoing support work as a single ecosystem, not as separate initiatives that hope researchers will somehow stitch them together on their own.
Policy Recommendations That Feed Back Into ERA
The project does not stop at individual researcher development. One of its six key objectives is to translate findings into evidence-based policy recommendations for strengthening research careers across the European Research Area (ERA).
This is where the impact extends well beyond direct participants. If the micro-credentialing framework works (and the consortium is structured to prove whether it does), the model can inform how other countries and institutions handle researcher career development. The policy layer turns a three-year project into a potential long-term shift in how Europe supports its early-stage research talent.

The green and digital transition will not be delivered by researchers who stay in labs, or by industry teams that ignore research. It will be delivered by people who can move between both worlds with fluency. SMART Researchers is building the infrastructure to make that movement less accidental and more systematic.
